Back to Scores

The Knights (0-3) travel to Saint Francis to take on the East Bethel Bandits (2-1) and look to earn their first win of the season.  The Knights have many new players this season who are trying to earn a roster spot.  The team looks to ignite some fire in their offense and get their season back on track.  They are currently on a 3 game skid after facing two of the best teams in state in a row.  Tonight Ricky Caldecott will take the mound for his first start in 2011.  Ricky has great control of his fastball and changeup.  If the Knights can score early Ricky always gives his team a chance to win.

The Knights picked up their first win of the year on a great night for baseball.  The Knights traveled to Saint Francis to take on the East Bethel Bandits and handed them a 5-2 loss that took 11 innings to finish.  Rick Caldecott shut down the Bandits' bats through 6 innings losing his no-hitter on a soft ground ball with eyes that skipped past the mound.  He would only allow three hits in his 6 innings with one earned run.

With the game tied in the 7th inning and relief pitching now on the mound the Bandits looked to take the lead with a runner on second and a base-hit to left field.  Knights' left fielder Dan Koopmeiners attacked the hard grounder and threw a bullet to home plate right on the money to keep the game tied 2-2.

Knights pitching would find more trouble in the 7th when the bases were walked loaded with two outs.  A call to the bullpen would bring in veteran relief pitcher Frank Matteson who threw one pitch to get an infield pop-up to end the inning leaving the bases loaded and the game tied 2-2.

The Knights had their chances to take the lead in the 8th, 9th, and 10th inning but the combination of bad base running and lack of clutch hitting kept them from scoring.  The game would go to the 11th inning still tied 2-2.  The first two batters for the Knights went down swinging, but the next three would reach on walks.  With two outs and the bases loaded, veteran Frank Matteson took a 2-2 fast ball deep into the right field gap for a bases clearing 3 RBI double (though he claims he could have taken third if he wasn't just coming off the DL).  Matteson would then come on to shut down the top of the Bandits order 1-2-3 to finish the game and pick up the victory.
