Knights Finish Rooster, Finish Season 9-7 Tied for 3rd

Four years ago Frank Matteson took over the reins of a winless team from the previous manager and hired the now General Manager Ryan Meehan to help run the team.  In each of their first 3 seasons the team would continue to get better and grow.  Going into the 2013 season management had high hopes with the new recruits they had signed. But could the team live up to expectations?

Monday night, the Knights took on the Rooster with a lot on the line.  Win and they finish the season tied for 3rd but get the 4th seed based on a tiebreaker.  Lose and they face the possibility of dropping to 7th place in the standings finishing in a 4 way tie at 8-8.

Danny Thering would get the start on the mound and would keep the game close going into the top of the 5th inning.  He would leave the inning with 1 out and Christ Trobec coming in for relief.  Thering would finish the day with 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 1 walk.  Trobec would get the Knights out of the inning allowing only one of the runners to score and keeping the game within reach.  Chris would come into the sixth inning and get 2 outs from the Roosters but would allow one run on a couple of hits making the game 2-1.  Colton Smit would come in for relief and would get the Rooster to pop out to right with multiple runners in scoring position ending the inning.

Matteson would lead off the bottom of the 6th inning and would fall to a quick 0-2 count.  He fought off the next couple pitches before getting a curveball left over the and rifled it over the center fielder's head into deep center.  He would end up coasting into 3rd with a leadoff triple and would ignite the Knight's bats.  Ryan Meehan, being a veteran base coach, would alertly keep Matteson from attempting to score an insider the park home run because there were no outs.  Shawn Rasmussen would come to the plate next and would also fall behind with 2 strikes.  Rasmussen would come through and sent a high fastball through the left side of the infield for an RBI scoring single tying the game at 2-2.

Catcher Justus Nelson would reach next on an error from the short stop giving the Knights 2 runners on with Dan Piilola coming to the plate.  Piilola, who has been on an absolute tear over the past handful of games, would continue his power surge and would drill a ball over the right fielder's head into the gap for a 2 run scoring triple giving the Knights a 2 run lead.  The Knights would add one more run on a Christian Zellner single to right, and the score would end 5-2 after Smit would come back out to close the 7th and earn the win.

The Knights finish the season with a Skyline league record of 9-7 which is their first winning season in their 4 year history under Matteson and Meehan.  They are 18-16 overall. Playoff games start this Saturday against the St. Paul Mudhens who took the 9th seed in the Skyline league.
